Tuesday's with Jesus #107

#107 "Picked up Dead"
July 31, 2007
"Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead." (Acts 20: 9)

I try not to get distracted when I'm in the middle of preaching a message and babies start having fits. Or the days when "inebriated at 11:00 in the morning" listeners decide to get a little loud. I really thought it was bad last week, when in the middle of my sermon a man in the back fell out and EMS had to be called. Imagine how Paul must have felt when in the middle of his message, (one that he felt would be the last one before these disciples would be permanently without his presence), he was interrupted by tragedy. Now granted, Paul was going "on and on". But Luke emphasizes the speech's length: it extended from midnight and, then, after the Lord's Supper-fellowship meal, until daybreak.

You know how you feel after eating a good meal? Full, satisfied and ... sleepy? Add to that a crowded upper room. Warm and close. There is a greasy, foul odor in the air from the many oil lamps. It's stuffy and smoky. The lamps are consuming the oxygen in the room and a young boy of about seven to fourteen years old, tries to catch the night air by sitting on a windowsill. Hypnotized by the flickering of the lights and Paul talking on and on, his drowsiness increases until he falls into a deep sleep and worse yet, falls out of the third story window. The Bible tells us that he was "picked up dead". Young's Literal Translation says that "he was lifted up dead." Now just so you don't think he was just unconscious...the word "dead" in the Greek used here means just that..."dead"! It comes from the Greek word "nekus", a corpse. Doctor Luke was there and I imagine he pronounced the lad dead on the spot. It's a rather comical story. Especially when I found that the meaning of the boy's name, Eutychus, means, "fortunate". In Latin, his name is "Fortunatus". Some good fortune to fall out a window!

Comical story...well maybe not. How many of us who are in our pews, in the middle of our Christian service, in our ministry or in our fellowship, are falling out of windows and being picked up dead? Everything looks good on the outside. But, how many of us feel like corpses on the inside?  Right in the middle of church and all of our Godly activity. If anybody really knew...would they be picking you up dead? You may not have fallen out of a window. You may have fallen off the wagon of your sobriety. It may not be the foul odor of oil lamps that you smell. It may be the foul odor of your own personal sin. That one that you just can't stop succumbing to. The lamps aren't consuming your oxygen but every time you think about your crumbling marriage, your child who's in trouble, or your dwindling finances, it's so hard to breathe. Your soul and your spirit, your mind and your emotions, just want to get near a window for a breath of fresh, cool air. You may have been pushed out that window and left for dead by someone else's abuse or rejection. I don't know who this message is for today or what exactly has left you a walking corpse, but this passage of Scripture speaks these words to you today...."Your life is in you. Repeat. There is life in you yet."

Even when the fortunate one appeared utterly dead, the apostle Paul was so convinced of what Christ's power could do that he said, "Don't be alarmed." ["Trouble not yourselves" KJV] "His life is in him. He's alive". There is life in you today, my friend. There are those hopes and dreams that you think are crushed by your circumstances. The devil is a liar. God put those dreams inside of you. No one or no thing can take them away. There is a plan for your life (see Jeremiah 29:11). A plan declared over you by God. And when God declares something, it always come to pass. Be confident. Have faith. Even if that faith is only as small as a mustard seed. Even if the life inside of you is only as small as a mustard seed. It's there. Don't be alarmed. Trouble not yourself. Life is in you. Because Christ is in you. You have life, in abundance, to the full, until it overflows. (John 10: 10)

The apostle Paul may be gone. He won't throw himself on you to bring you back to life. But the Lord is not gone. And He has left tokens of His grace for all who would be encouraged. He left the story of the restored Eutychus. He left His Spirit-enabled grace, and He left His Word. This was a tragic story. Your story may be just as tragic. Your situation may seem as dead as that young boy. But Jesus Christ came back to life. Through Him Eutychus came back to life and so can you. Eutychus really was "fortunate". Don't give up just because you fell. Don't miss the miracle of God in your life by trying to run away from Him. Your situation is not too hard for Jesus. You can be taken home alive like Eutychus.

Maybe this incident inspired Paul to write these words in his letter to his friends in the city of Corinth. He had to put the theology of what had just happened in writing - the church had to hear these words... "Death has been swallowed up in victory."  "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" "The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." Without Eutychus being picked up dead, Paul may never have had the inspiration for these words. Without whatever is happening in your life, you will never see that it has no power over you. You will never see that dead thing come back to life. The victory is yours!  You are not a victim to your circumstance. Your circumstance is a victim to your God! You may be picked up dead, but you will be taken home alive and greatly comforted.

Tuesday's with Jesus #106

#106 "Just Keep Askin"
July 24, 2007
"Will not God bring about justice for His chosen ones, who cry out to Him day and night? Will He keep putting them off?" (Luke 18: 7)

If you're a parent, can you recall times when your little angel bothered you so many times with a request that you finally just gave in and let the darling have their way? Jesus tells us the story of just such a situation. A story about a persistent widow and an unjust judge. This biblical passage is not hard to interpret. Jesus gives us the skinny right at the beginning. The interpretation is given in the first verse: "Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up."

The judge may have been a Roman magistrate who really had no interest in Jewish people's needs. He really didn't care about this woman's issues. But the Bible says that she kept coming. The Greek word, "ercheto", implies the imperfect tense, meaning that she kept coming over and over again. Over and over again she kept appearing in the judge's courtroom. She repeatedly came, looking for release from the injustices of her "adversary". It is interesting to me that the Greek word used here for adversary, is the same Greek word "antidikos" used for Satan, your adversary, in 1 Peter 5:8. The adversary that prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. You!

This lady is a bad mamma jamma. She's persistent. She's tenacious. She won't take no for an answer. She's got a "won't quit" state of mind. And she was rewarded by this judge, who didn't care about her, God, or anyone else. Not rewarded for her eloquence. Not rewarded for her influence because she had none. She was a widow with no man to defend her. She was rewarded for her persistence. Reminds me of David, who said, "But I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress and He hears my voice." (Psalm 55: 16-17) Persistent. Reminds me of Hannah, barren and provoked continually by Peninnah, who year after year prayed for a child. (see 1 Samuel Chapter 1) Tenacious. Reminds me of Jesus who prayed three times in the Garden of Gethsemene for the cup to be taken away. (Matthew 26: 36-44) Or Paul who prayed three times for the thorn to be removed from his flesh. (2 Corinthians 12: 7-9) Outstanding examples of persistent, tenacious, "won't quit" prayer. And of course, there was Jacob, in the championship wrestling match of the ancient world, wrestling with God saying, "I will not let you go unless you bless me." He went away with a permanent limp, but He went away with the answer to his prayers. (Genesis 32: 22-32) When was the last time you hung on to God and wouldn't leave Him alone, until He blessed you? Until He answered your prayer?

Prayer is one of the mechanisms of relationship that God gives to us, His children to be in touch with Him. God may not need prayer, but we do. One of my commentaries says it this way, "He responds and listens to His children. He does not wind up the universe like a watch, as the deists of old argued. He does not merely send the universe ticking on its merry way and sit back to observe as an uninterested spectator; God relates to His creation. This is especially true when our prayers cry out for justice and righteous treatment of His children." (The IVP New Testament Commentary Series. Luke. Darrell L. Bock)

This woman "bothered" the judge. She got on his nerves. She caused him trouble. Every time his tent was set up for judging, there she was. So he finally gives her what she asks. And if an unrighteous judge responds this way, how much more will a righteous God!  The judge is the total antithesis of our Heavenly Father. God is not bothered by you or by your prayers. The judge didn't care about her, but God cares about you. God loves justice. Psalm 11: 7 says, "For the Lord is righteous, He loves justice." And Jesus is the archenemy of your adversary, the devil. He loves to crush Satan's head with His mighty heel. Don't let your patience ever run out. The response may not come exactly when we want. We may have to wait for it. Just keep askin'. 1 Thessalonians 5: 17 says, "pray continually."

If it seems God hasn't answered your prayer yet, don't quit! The answer could be just around the corner. God's delays are not God's denials. Our sense of timing is flawed, but God's timing is impeccable. So pray persistently, and then wait patiently for His answer. One of the greatest men of faith in Christian history was the English preacher, George Mueller. He wrote these words about praying: "The great point is never to give up until the answer comes. I have been praying for 63 years and 8 months for one man's conversion. He is not saved yet, but he will be. How can it be otherwise? I am praying." George Mueller died and the man was still not saved. But as they lowered Mueller's casket into the ground, the man repented of his sins and trusted Jesus as his Savior–that's persistent praying!

I don't know what you're praying for today. I don't know how long you've been praying that same prayer. Is it for a marriage gone cold and sour? Is it for a child who causes you to lose sleep at night? Maybe your checkbook has all of its' lines written in red and the bills are stacked so high that you don't know where to begin. Perhaps you don't think that you can stand that pain in your body for one more day. Maybe you can't get that nagging feeling out of the pit of your stomach that you're just not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, or worth much of anything. The devil is a liar! Dr. Luke lets us eavesdrop today on a scene where our Savior is telling us to pray. Honestly, persistently, tenaciously and without ceasing. "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (James 5: 16) He will see that you get justice.

If Jesus came today would He find you living by faith? Would He find you displaying confidence in Him by persisting in prayer? Would He find you waiting on Him? Remember that God's delays are not God's denials. Where will He find you when He comes? Biting your nails or on your knees? Worrying or worshipping? Remember that worry is worshipping the words of the adversary. Prayer is worshipping the God of the Universe. The God who, in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, says to you....today.. "Take an example from this nagging woman...Just Keep Askin'."

Continually askin',

Tuesday's with Jesus #105

#105 "Flaky Focus"
July 17, 2007
"For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2: 2)

Nothing that is valuable is achieved without effort. Fritz Kreisler, the famous violinist, testified to this point when he said, "Narrow is the road that leads to the life of a violinist. Hour after hour, day after day and week after week, for years, I lived with my violin. There were so many things that I wanted to do that I had to leave undone; there were so many places I wanted to go that I had to miss if I was to master the violin. The road that I traveled was a narrow road and the way was hard."

Someone else once said, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." (Jesus in Matthew 7: 13-14) Only a few...reminds me of when Esther won the heart of the king of Persia and gained access into his throne room and his intimate chambers. Like an episode of "Mega-Bachelor", a thousand something women were vying for the role of Queen of Persia. But only one "got the rose." Few would ever gain that kind of access to his presence because the deeper you go into the palace, the fewer the people. But the greater the provision! Esther gained access because she placed more value on being with the king himself than on seeking a favor or a decree from his hand.

Nothing that is valuable is achieved without effort. Without focus. Without directed attention and concentration. Just think back to your day so far. Or if it's early, think back to yesterday. Where was your focus? Where was your attention given? What were you concentrating on? Maybe it was on your child who is causing you heartache as you wet your pillow with tears at night. Maybe it was your husband who has left you for a younger model. Perhaps you were out there chasing the American dream of wealth and comfort and keeping up with the Jones' or the Smiths'. Were you focusing on your problems, your checkbook, your meetings, your appearance or any other type of "flaky focus"? Yes, I say "flaky". The reality is that those things are the stuff of which life is made of. You face problems and situations and responsibilities every day. But is that where your focus lies? Do you look to those things as the source of your happiness and peace? If those situations would just work out, life would be grand, right? Wrong!

Do you notice that the road is filled with people these days chasing those things? The perfect husband or wife. The ideal family. Perfect, well behaved kids. Money in the bank...two cars in the garage and a mortgage. Maybe a cottage or a boat. But my Bible tells me to seek God's face. To seek is to look early or eagerly for something, like looking for the dawn. Psalm 27: 8 says, "To you, O my heart he has said, "Seek my face!" Your face, Lord, I will seek." Like Esther, we are told to seek the King, not just what He can do for us.

The Psalmist knew this truth when he said, "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" (Psalm 42: 1-2) He displays his yearning for God. His passion for the Almighty. David knew this secret as well when he said, "One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple." (Psalm 27: 4) We are not to seek joy. We are not to seek peace. Dare I say that we are not to seek His blessings? We are to seek the King himself. We are to dig and search for Him as we would seek for hidden treasure. He is our treasure and He is all that we need.

Jesus said that if we would seek first His kingdom and His way of doing things, that all else would be given to us besides. He knows our needs, our pain, our desires and our problems. But He specifically tells us to seek Him. He'll take care of the rest. That's a promise! He is your Shepherd. He is your Provider. He is your Healer. He is your Deliverer. He is your All in All. You haven't thought of anything that He has forgotten. He doesn't need your advice. He doesn't need you to remind Him. He doesn't need you to tell Him how things ought to get done. He knows, He cares and He will work it all out. Seek Him!

I know that it's lonely on that road. Everyone else seems to be chasing their dreams and their desires and the solutions to their problems. They want to know why you're not running frantically, doing the same. But you have a greater mission. Seeking to touch the heart of the one true God. The King of Heaven and earth. When you have access to the King's heart, all that He has becomes yours, because you are His. You will lack no good thing. You will have complete and genuine and perfect peace, when your mind is staid on Him. (Isaiah 26: 3)  Sometimes really wealthy folk hide their identity so that they can find people who will want to be their friends for who they are, not for what they have. In like manner, God wants you to want Him. Not what He has for you. Not what He can do for you. He wants you to want HIM! Because He wants YOU!

This isn't a vain pursuit. God promises that if you seek Him, you will find Him. Before you know it, the crowds will get thinner, the space will get wider and you will walk past the gates, the outer courts and even the inner courts. You will find yourself in the bed chamber of the King. Where the conversation will be intimate. Where the secrets are revealed to you. Where all provision is presented to you. Because you are His and He is yours. He just wants you to love Him for who He is. Get rid of your flaky focus. Focus on the King.

Tuesday's with Jesus #104

#104 "An Upside Down Kingdom"
July 10, 2007
"From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.  "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." (John 6: 66-69)

When we choose to follow Christ, things don't always make sense. We are instructed to give in order to receive. To return good for evil. To love our enemies. God's Kingdom is an upside down kingdom. There are difficult sayings in our Bibles. Things we don't understand. We face situations in our lives that often don't seem to make sense if we are children of God. Bad things do happen to good people. To saved people. Why? Jesus promises us that we will face trouble and tribulation in our lives. Hard teachings. Upside down thinking.

Things were no different 2000 years ago when Jesus walked the earth in the flesh. He preached the very things out loud, in person, that we read in our copy of the Bible. On top of that, the people saw Him perform miracles and wonders and signs. They watched Him feed the five thousand. They saw Him walk on water. He spoke in parables and metaphors. To those who had "eyes to see and ears to hear", it made some sort of sense. To others...well, it seemed sort of upside down, hard and even unbelievable. On top of all this, Jesus tells the disciples that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Talk about being offended! As often happened, His teaching wasn't understood. A violent argument started in the crowd regarding what He meant. Their perception remained at a materialistic level. They wondered, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?" (John 6:52) As good Jews, they knew the command, "You must not eat...any blood." (Lev. 3:17) Yet this blood was the means of atonement. They were shocked and puzzled. Hard teaching. Upside down thinking.

Jesus rejected their desire to make Him their political King. He demanded personal faith. He stressed total human inability to work salvation and the total ability of the works of God. This was unpalatable to many people and we see that "many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him." Kind of the same as today, don't you think?

Have you ever watched someone that you know personally turn away from Christ and return to an old life of sin? I know you've seen the news reports of pastors and evangelists who have given in to sin and temptation and ruined their careers and entire congregations. Maybe you personally just can't seem to follow those hard sayings of Jesus and walk through the narrow gate where few travel. (see Matthew 7: 13-14) Are you one of those disciples who turned back and no longer follows Christ? The sayings are too hard. The kingdom is too upside down. The results don't come quickly. Bad things continue to happen. No one that you know lives this way. Pop psychology makes more sense. Maybe Oprah, and Doctor Phil and Judge Judy have better answers. At least they're easier to understand. But the Savior Himself turns and looks you straight in the eye and says, "Will YOU leave me too?"

How will you answer Him? In our text, Peter was the spokesman for the Twelve. He says, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." The path may have been hard, but Peter was convinced that Jesus' words lead to life. Are you convinced? To whom shall YOU go? To the bookstore for a self-help book? To the TV for the daytime talk shows that show you how the world is doing life? To the counselor's office for a little couch time? (I'm not against good, biblical counseling, but..) Or....will you go to the One, the only One, who has the words and the gift of eternal life? Jesus says, "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life."

Some have said to me, "well, that was Peter..the apostle...he's a saint...I don't have that kind of faith." Today I read the words of Peter himself that said that you and I have been given the same (of equal value and honor) faith as Peter and the other apostles. (2 Peter 1: 1b)  Peter was a human being just like us. He was a sinner, a doubter, a man who cursed and even was arrogant enough to rebuke the Lord Jesus Himself. The only perfect Man was Jesus...we are right there in the same league as Peter. You have that same kind of faith.

The reality is that you will never find fulfillment in the things of this world. You will never find the answers in a book store, on the side of a coffee cup, or on the TV. The only number one best seller is your Bible. The only one who holds the words of life and all of the answers that you will ever need is your Savior. His words may be strange. They may sound upside down and inside out. They may be hard at times. You may need to muster up every ounce of courage and determination that you have to obey them. But they have been tried and tested and will never fail. Many around you will turn from Him and His words and no longer follow Him. There are many on the broad road that leads to destruction. They stay on while the going is good, but when things get tough, they'll desert. What about you?

"You do not want to leave too, do you?"......Jesus

Tuesday's with Jesus #103

#103 "Dreams and Visions"
July 3, 2007
"And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus." (Luke 1: 30-31 KJV)

It is difficult to imagine the feelings of this young Jewish girl when an angel of the Lord told her that she would conceive a son when she had never known a man. Mary was living her life. Eagerly awaiting her marriage to Joseph. Ready to embrace her new role as a wife. She was most likely dreaming of giving Joseph a son one day in the future. After their marriage. The Bible tells us that she was troubled at what the angel said to her and she must have been afraid. The angel of the Lord told her to "Fear Not". God knew her fear, her confusion, her inability to reason this one out. She exclaims, "How shall this be?"

Has God ever interrupted your life with a word, a dream or a vision that will change the course of your days from here on out? He has something that He wants you to do. You start feeling a stirring inside. You find that you are drawn to something. It's unmistakable that there's a calling there, drawing you to do ... to dare. It's exciting, but horribly frightening at the same time. You can't reason it out...and you say, "How shall this be? CAN it be?"

Maybe you want to start your own business. Maybe you are being called to ministry. Perhaps it's time to start a family and stay home to raise your children. You are feeling the call to go overseas to be a missionary. Whatever you feel tugging at you, exciting you, and making you tingle with the prospect of it... that's your dream, your vision, your calling being conceived by God. God's super is hitting your natural and conception is taking place. God's seed of a dream implants itself in the womb of your future and begins to grow.

I know...I know...it's going to take money. The kids are still young and underfoot. What will your family and friends think? You're already so busy. Your life was on course and you knew the direction it was going. And just like Mary, you say, "How shall this be?!" I'm here today to say to you, my friend....don't abort the dream. Just as a natural mother can choose to abort her child, we can abort the seed that God conceives in the womb of our future. We can give way to all those excuses. We can give in to doubt and unbelief. We can choose to reason instead of trust. We can abort the very thing that God has planned for the rest of our lives.

God's timing is perfect. He chose the perfect person, the perfect generation in history and the perfect place to conceive His Son in Mary's womb. Shutter to think what would've happened to us all if Mary had refused! And He is choosing you...for this task...for such a time as this...to bring to full birth His plan and purpose for your life. It doesn't matter what side of the tracks you came from. It doesn't matter what side of the tracks you live on today. It doesn't matter if you don't have the right education and training. And it doesn't matter if you don't have the money. It doesn't matter if you don't have the right look or the right friends. When God implants His seed for your future, He will provide all of the nourishment and sustenance and provision that you need to see the birth of your dream come to pass.

The angel told Mary that the Holy Ghost would come upon her and the power of the Highest would overshadow her. (see Luke 1: 35) Notice that it was God's Spirit that had the power. Not Mary. You're right...you don't have the power, the means, the whatever, to get this dream birthed. But HE does! Hallelujah! For the angel said to Mary and to you..."For with God nothing shall be impossible." (v. 37) I have also heard that it's "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts." (Zechariah 4:6)

Watch this now...faith opens the door for the anointing. In verse 38, Mary answers the angel by saying, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." Bam! Conception takes place. It didn't begin when the angel spoke. It began when Mary spoke. In spite of her questions, her doubts and her fears, Mary agrees with God and His seed meets her egg and conception is achieved. No matter how impossible your dream is...let it be unto you according to that word that God has given you. Agree, don't abort! Believe, don't bemoan. Mary's cousin Elizabeth, pregnant with her own impossibility, tells Mary, "blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord." (v. 45) There will be a performance of the very thing that God told you...if you believe! It will be the performance of a lifetime...your lifetime!

Start that business. Birth that ministry. Preach the gospel. Sing that award winning song. Write that book. Start a family. Go on a mission trip. Whatever is stirring inside of you, kicking against the walls of your soul and never letting you forget it's there...you can do it. By His might. By His power. And by your willingness to say, "Be it unto me according to thy word". Like Elizabeth, I care about you. I'm cheering you on. I am pregnant with my own impossibility, but I can tell you today that's it's coming to pass. It's worth the risk. It's worth the hard work. It's worth the skepticism and criticism of others. Oh, and one more thing...Promise that you'll send me a birth announcement when YOUR dreams have become your reality!
